Winning the Race of the Heart

Caroline

Cleo arrived, she found me in my room hiding out. I had felt that being around others was too much for me after the breakfast I had with Samson. So as she came into my room, I could see she was already plotting in her head how she would cheer me up.

“OK Caroline, what’s up? What’s the emergency?” she said as she wrapped me in her arms for a supportive hug.

“I finally told Samson about Samuel and it didn’t go well. He’s mad at me and told me he would leave me alone. The one man I have truly loved all of my life, wants nothing to do with me.”

“Honey, I’m sure that once the news settles in, he will try to get you two back together as a couple. You remember that the news was life changing. Give him time and a chance to come to grips with the news. I wouldn’t be surprised if something wasn’t already in the works.” Cleo said.

“OK, I’ll not stress over it anymore. Thanks so much for your support.”

“You’re welcome. Now let’s get you dolled up so you can wow everyone at the wedding, especially Samson.”

For the rest of the day, I had to pretend that everything was OK. I must say that I would have won an award for my performance. I was determined not to let my family know what happened between Samson and I at breakfast. Making sure I stayed busy and out of the one-to-one conversations, I had survived the wedding day clamour.

At least I thought I had carried on a great performance until I ran into my mother about an hour before the wedding. She had cornered me in one of those private places in the castle and I was trying my best to not let her see the pain I was in.

“Darling, I haven’t seen you all day and I’ve wanted to find out how things went this morning with Samson,” she asked me as she placed a hand on my back to guide me towards a room for more privacy.

“Mother, things are fine. Let’s get back to finishing things because we only have an hour left.”

“You know and I do that everything is done and that all we are doing now is waiting for the wedding to start. Now tell me, how did things go?”

I could tell that she would not let it go, so I looked her in the eye and told her everything. Boy was I delivering a stellar performance - until I got to the end. I told her that Samson said that we wouldn’t be mating, and that he was expecting to start a relationship with his son.

“Oh dear, this is not the outcome I was expecting. Let me work on things and fix this for you.”

“No mother, my family has done enough ‘fixing things” and I’m tired of it. Let it go and I’ll deal with everything after the wedding. I’m trying not to think about it because this is not my day.
